The Public Health Research (PHR) Programme are accepting Expressions of Interest to Public Health Intervention Responsive Studies Teams (PHIRST).
The PHR Programme wishes to facilitate the co-production of responsive research with a focus on local governments. Such research should help inform the delivery and implementation of current or future public health interventions intended to improve the health of the public and reduce inequalities in health. In 2020 the PHR Programme launched the PHIRST scheme, which is currently funding 8 academic research teams. Due to the success of the scheme, PHR are now commissioning up to 6 new teams.
The teams will undertake responsive research with a focus on local government across the UK.
The teams will be commissioned by the PHR Programme on a 5 year contract.

All primary research projects are expected to establish a programme appointed Study Steering Committee and it is important that you read the Research Governance Guidance before completing your application. Costs incurred by this committee should be included in the budget as appropriate.

Expressions of Interest together with the brief CVs should be emailed to phr@nihr.ac.uk by 1pm on 2 July 2024.
We anticipate that shortlisted applicants will develop a Stage 2 proposal throughout August with a late September submission deadline. Interviews will take place towards the end of November, with successful applicants signing contracts from 1 August 2025.
